Great Help for the Socially Challenged If you are focused on making friends and being remembered in social situations, this book is for you. The author clarifies basic concepts by clearly defining what he means by terms such as “courage,” “competence,” and “confidence.” He understands the importance of acting “as if.” He discusses such important sub-topics as touching and positioning and offers specific techniques such as “the belief destroyer.” It’s easy to tell that this work is fundamentally sound because he gets the fundamental point correct, namely, focus on the other instead of on yourself. If you are genuinely interested in the other person and ask open-ended questions, your approach cannot do anything but improve — especially if you practice some of the other techniques Mr. Oliver details.

Well-Written Guide There are so many communication tips in this book that I couldn’t possibly speak to all of them. However, I do want to take a moment to talk about my favorite – nested loops. This is a technique whereby a message is broken up, “sidetracked in the middle”, so before the conscious mind gets a chance to examine it, the mind has moved on to the next part of the story. This allows for the original message to be accepted without much (or any) examination. In other words – your story doesn’t have to be linear. Along with this technique is one I’ve often used – and am still amazed at it’s power: The use of SILENCE, also known as a dramatic pause. It really does command attention. I highly recommend this book to anyone who relies on communication – whether written or spoken.

Communication book This may sound weird but I never was taught about right ways of communication while growing up during my school and college years in my own country. Moving to the US and starting with my new education here, at first I took my first communication class because it was a part of my program. I was really surprised how much I missed. Actually in my country we did not have such wide national diversity as it is in the US. Moving here I met a lot of people with different cultures and ways of behavior. Many times I was very frustrated when I was not understood or I did not understand others’ behavior. In my communication class, the first one and the second, later, I have leaned a lot about the right ways of communication. That helped me much more to understand people from other cultures including American. This book is very important and describes many aspects of communication that is so much important in our life.Worth of investment.
