What Is Nlp?

Neuro Linguistic Programming, or NLP, is a fairly new discipline that is slowly gaining acceptance and popularity in the field of alternative medicine. It is a behavioral technology that falls under the classification of mind-body medicine.

NLP uses the mind-body connection to help an individual heal. It enhances the mind’s capacity to affect physiological functions and symptoms that determine one’s health conditions.

How NLP Works

In practice, NLP promotes changes in the individual using different models, guiding principles, attitudes, and techniques related to real-life behavior.  NLP is based on useful “presuppositions” which are statements or beliefs that facilitate an effective change in people, in their mindset and in the conduct of their daily lives.  It assists individuals in identifying role models from whom they can learn and create patterns of excellence for their own guidance and inspiration.

“Neuro” refers to the interaction of the mind and body, while “Linguistic” pertains to the way of thinking that is communicated through an individual’s use of language, both verbal and non-verbal.

“Programming” is about the pattern of thinking and behavior, of organizing ideas and acting upon them. These patterns, or programs, are what everyone uses in their daily lives until they are re-programmed or they learn something new.

This is exactly how NLP patients heal themselves and fight their diseases – by using communication to understand their own thinking process so that they can re-train their minds and gain control of their thinking patterns, eliminating the old and self-destructive programs and replacing them with a more positive and purposeful way of thinking.

Benefits of NLP

NLP enables individuals to choose their own mental, emotional, and physical states of well-being. For those suffering from a long-term ailment, NLP can help alter thinking patterns, purge negative emotions or limiting decisions, and inspire a more productive, happier and healthier future.

NLP is thought by many to be one of the most effective methods for achieving self-transformation or self-improvement.  It uses varied tools and techniques to help individuals change, adopt, or eliminate behaviors as they deem appropriate.  Generally, NLP uses models of proven success patterns which can be replicated in non-successful activities.

Through NLP sessions, participants can review their past successes, study the strategies used and see how to adopt them in the less-successful areas of their lives. The process can also be used to aid in the healing process. Other than helping patients re-program their views and attitudes towards food, exercise and other health-related issues, NLP also uses hypnosis to handle weight loss, coping with stress, dealing with phobias and many other issues and symptoms.

With the growing popularity of NLP, finding a competent NLP practitioner has become much easier.  However, know that NLP is not regulated. There are no standards in the training of NLP practitioners and there is no standardized testing or certification.

Fortunately, there are professional associations for NLP practitioners around the world, and many competent hypnotherapists are also well known for using NLP principles. Many NLP practitioners, such as Michael Peak, also practice hypnotherapy.
